Team HIDI

Every now and again, a turn of events causes us all to open our eyes and face harsh realities. These trials never come at opportune times, and often come at the most inopportune. As many of you have heard, local Chef and dear friend to Octane Coffee Ryan Hidinger has been diagnosed with stage IV gallbladder cancer, on the eve of opening his latest restaurant venture, Staplehouse, with wife Jen Hidinger.

As a force of leadership in Atlanta restaurants Muss & Turners and Local Three, Ryan has been delighting the tastebuds of this fine town for years, pushing the whole of the service industry to higher standards with his vision. In addition, his and Jen’s work with Staplehouse, one of the cities premier underground supper clubs, sets the standard by which other sustainable supper clubs are measured. Their intimate affairs highlight and uplift locality and seasonality as much as they do creativity. It isn’t often that we are able to give back to such a character, but this moment is one such moment. In support of Ryan and wife Jen, Octane is partnering with Team Hidi to spread the word and give back to a man whose impact on our town is incalcuable.

In addition to supporting the Team Hidi Benefit on January 27th at King Plow Arts Center, Octane will be donating a portion of the sales of our Colombian coffee offering, from the Cuaca Timbio Co-Op, to the Team Hidi efforts. $3 of each Pre-Pack sold will go directly to financial relief efforts for Ryan, who faces a daunting journey ahead. With all of our help, we can remove these financial barriers and make way for healing and restoration.

With your help, we can make a real difference in Ryan’s life, as he has done for us so many times in the past, and will do in the future.

Check out TeamHIDI.org to show your support and celebrate Ryan’s strength and his future. Then, when you come to Octane to purchase a bag of coffee, take a look at the Team Hidi bag and know that together we are powerful and that nothing is beyond our reach.

Filling Station, vol. III

Okay, we all survived the Apocalypse. That was the hard part. The question now is where to take civilization, now that we’ve gotten a new lease on life…

How about the return of FREE SPIN at Octane Westside tonight, December 28th? I can’t think of a better way to rein in the New Year.

If you’re similarly flummoxed as to where life might take you in the New Year, don’t fret. You’ll have plenty to keep you occupied in the coming months.

Let’s take this one step at a time, though.

JANUARY!!!

This month has us at Octane just as giddy as we can be. January holds in store for us, and for the great lil town of Birmingham, Alabama, the unveiling of our 4th coffee shop! Octane Coffee is bringing its particular brand of service to the Homewood neighborhood of Birmingham, and we couldn’t be more excited to get in and grow with the community there. Just off a main thoroughfare through the neighborhood, we’re keeping things just under the radar.

Homewood will get all the glorious coffees that Atlanta has come to know and love, but we have something special in store for our newest shop… BREAKFAST! Whether you’re an eggs n’ bacon sort of fellow or more into some grains and some fruit, we’ll have some nice treats to get you through your mornings. Not to mention a staff of hunks roasting coffee in the same room, for you to ogle as you dress your Commuter Cup at the condiment bar.

This shop is going to be top-notch, folks. Expect the comforting aromas of freshly-roasted beans to rouse you from your slumber in the mornings. Look forward to delighting in the wonders of hand-crafted brews, savoring each decadent morsel of pastry, indulging yourself in ridiculously-creamy cappuccinos and imbibing of cocktails from the bar-

Wowzers. That got overly flowery. I mean, that really escalated quickly. Suffice it to say, we’re excited to be part of Homewood and Birmingham and the whole Southeast. We love you all.

Back home in Atlanta, we won’t be sitting on our haunches. We’ll have a couple new coffees rotate onto the menu as shipments come in, and our stock of merchandise and gear has never been more robust. Also, our roasters have been playing with some new techniques, so if your favorites start tasting even friggin’ better, now you know where to send your thank-you cards and/or meatloafs. Heck, with all the new coffee and gear coming in, we may have to have a class or two to make sure you guys are getting the most out of your beans on the homefront. Yes, that was foreshadowing.

Also, the notorious Octane Beer Dinner will be making it’s second appearance in January. Look out for more details on that as we finish up the menu.

Until then, ladies and gents, we’ll be seeing you around. Drop by, grab a capp and spend a little of the New Year with your favorite ATL coffee comrades!

Filling Station, vol. II

Hey All,

Lots has happened since last we spoke!

Our first Beer Dinner came and went in a whirl, but it was AWESOME. Thanks to all that attended and to our kitchen and bar for putting on such a great intro to our dinner series!

Also, three of our baristas just competed for Atlanta’s honor in the Southeast Regional Barista Competition this past weekend, and they really showed out. Thanks to John, Keelan and Dan for representing Octane with swagger and aplomb! Also, thanks to Dustin for the long hours of training and for the rest of our stellar staff for picking up the slack so that we could put on for our city! And lest we forget, thanks to all the Octane friends for their support year after year.

Between barista competition season and the upcoming holiday season, we may be all season-ed out! Oh, shucks, of course we aren’t! Like everyone else out there, we at Octane look forward to the joys of round-the-clock holiday tunes, frantic last-minute shopping and harried trips in- and out-of-town. We tend to thrive under those fight-or-flight moments, so we have a couple pointers for you to get you through it without a scratch.

The following is a simple 5-part guide on how to survive the upcoming holiday season, and hopefully make you the surprise hero if things get hairy.

1. Synchronize Your Schedule

There’s so much to keep up with when the holidays get into full swing. If you don’t put in a little footwork, you could find yourself in over your head in no time flat. Call up your friends and family and get on the same page. For that matter, call us up and make sure you know our holiday hours. There’s nothing worse than swinging by for a brew to get you through all that gift-wrapping to find us in the middle of our holiday party!

So, our holiday hours shall be…

Saturday, Dec 15 – 8am-5pm
Sunday, Dec 16 – 9am-10pm
Christmas Eve – 7am-3pm
Christmas Day – CLOSED!
New Years Eve – 8am-6pm
New Years Day – 9am-Midnight

2. Get All Your Gifts

There’s nothing worse than waking up Christmas morning and realizing you forgot your husband’s gift. I mean, if you’d popped over a day earlier and gotten him a bag of the new Guatemalan we have in stock, you’d be GOLDEN right now. Alas, it’s going into the grinder of your good friend across town. That’s a shame. So PLAN AHEAD!

We get fresh beans in twice a week, and we have a fine selection of brewing equipment from Hario, Chemex, Clever, Beehouse and Baratza. Drop by and pick up something special for those you love. If you can’t decide, we also have gift cards. Just sayin’.

3. Keep a Level Head

With all that family bound to be flying into the great city of Atlanta, it’s sure to be crazy out there. Sometimes it’s nice to just stop and take a breather. If things are getting too crazy out there, take a little YOU time. Get a mani-pedi. Indulge in another Frosty The Snowman cupcake. Slip a second flat-screen TV into the cart while she’s scoping out Bluetooth accessories… Do what you have to do.

And if things really get clutch, drop by one of our shops and we’ll make you feel at home for just long enough for you to get your bearings.

4. Be Prepared

These Georgia Winters can be brutal. They can also be prissy and over-dramatic. Seriously, it only takes three or four snowflakes to shut down the city for a week. In case things do get locked up, you want to have a little stock in the cabinet to get you through until you can come see us again. So stock up, friends! We have fresh beans in all three of our stores. Our new offerings from Finca El Tormenta in Nicaragua and Finca El Carmen from Guatemala are particularly exciting at the moment.

Also, if you come grab some beans, it will give our newest recruits Wil, Kevin, Joseph and Michael an opportunity to wax poetic to you for a moment. They both really love to share their passion coffee. Give them their Christmas wish!

5. Get a Little Space

After the holidays, sometimes it’s nice to just get away for a moment. Some people head to a cabin in the mountains, some head to Miami for a little sun… Perhaps you should do something a little different. Perhaps visit a nearby town that you’ve never been to. Perhaps hop onto I-20 and head west for a couple hours to Birmingham, grab a hotel for the evening and scope out one of the coolest little town this side of the Mississippi (albeit just barely).

While you’re there, check out the giant statue of Vulcan and take an ironic photo of his massive, exposed butt. And stop by the Jazz Hall of Fame. If you have a bit more time, you can check out where our newest store is opening, in Homewood. They’ll be putting in counter tops and gear soon, so stop by and get a glimpse of our future.

To top it all off, we recommend a burrito from the Little Donkey right next door and dessert at Steel City Pops on the other side. Trust us, it’ll be just what you need to get away from Atlanta for a day.

There you have it! If you follow those five steps, you’ll be well on your way towards a smooth holiday season, and it may just make you the surprise hit of the year with your friends and loved ones!

So, from ours to yours, Happy Holidays!

It’s Competition Time Again!

Well, that special time of year is upon us again. No, I’m not talking about those chilly months with endless nights of cocoa, holiday coniferous trees and audacious light-shows. I’m talking about BARISTA COMP SEASON!

It all came a little sooner than any of us in the Southeast were expecting, but the field of barista competitors descending upon Atlanta in the coming week is phenomenal. There’s talent flying in from Washington DC, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia, not to mention Octane’s own three champions representing our fine hometown. Be ready to have your socks knocked off by some competitors that are at the very top of their games.

Also, in true #serbc fashion, look for plenty of awesome coffees to try and good times to have in the days surrounding the competition itself. Here are a couple events you don’t want to miss!

Thursday, Nov 29 – SERBC Thursday Night Throwdown

http://www.facebook.com/events/309101662529789/

Condesa Coffee, 7PM
480 John Wesley Dobbs Ave
Old 4th Ward

Be here with a couple tricks up your sleeves. I’ve seen a couple of these competitors in action, and their tulips make me shake in my boots. Sign-ups are $5, winner keeps the whole thing.

Friday, Nov 30 – SERBC PARTY!

http://www.facebook.com/events/432261070157170/

Ponce City Market
650 North Ave NE
Old 4th Ward

Hosted by Atlanta friends and SERBC-sponsors Batdorf & Bronson, this party is certainly not to be missed. Shmooze with the best in the biz and enjoy some good ole-fashioned Southern hospitality. Get down with a Southern tradition and sign up in the Cornhole tournament for some sweet prizes. I think they’re giving away grinders…

Saturday, Dec 01 – BGA Party
Octane Coffee at The Jane
437 Memorial Drive, suite A5
Grant Park

If you don’t have your BGA membership, you really should. Continued education, street cred, sleep-away camp… this organization has it all. So get your pin and head over to Grant Park on Saturday night for an evening of craft-cocktail-induced debauchery at the hands of the Southeasts’ Finest Spro-Slingers! If you don’t have a membership, just try to waddle in underneath someone’s coat or something. The spread will be worth the risk.

Sunday, Dec 02 – Finals!
Ponce City Market
650 North Ave NE
Old Fourth Ward

This is it! The six finalist competitors face off Sunday morning. You don’t want to miss this. These guys and girls are gonna go all out for you. They’ve got all their beans in one hopper and they’re ready to grind it out for the trophy. So come and see the fireworks, and then find that special someone in the crowd and ask them out to brunch. We have loads of good brunch places in the ATL. Just ask.

All right, that about does it for the competition recap. If you can’t make it out to show some love this weekend, stop by an Atlanta shop this week and show your support! Ask to taste a competition espresso. Ask for a cappuccino, but for the barista to split those shots and give you one on the side. Your barista will love you forever if you do this.

Can’t wait to see you all!

Filling Station, vol. I

Hey All!

It’s seems like we’re always cooking up something new for you folks, here at Octane Coffee. If it isn’t a new coffee bean we’re losing our minds over, it’s a new seasonal small bite or a limited-run craft beer. We even began dabbling in the world of haute supper clubbery with our first-ever Beer Dinner, a five-course feast designed by our kitchen and paired with an oak-barrel-aged milk stout from New Holland Brewing.

All this to say that sometimes it’s easy to get lost in the mix. Never fear! The Filling Station is here to keep you headed on the right track. Did you ever want to know when the next cask night was happening? Or how many layers Stevie dropped into that tulip at the last latte art throwdown? Now you don’t have to wonder. It’s all gonna be right here. And he dropped 7 layers, by the way. It was absurd.

For now, however, let’s start simple. This month is already half over and we still have loads to accomplish at all three of our Atlanta shops, not to mention the newest edition to the Octane family, Octane Birmingham, which should be gracing the Homewood neighborhood of Birmingham early next year. Y’all be patient!

Over on the Westside, John’s got some great new coffee’s on the menu. If you haven’t tried that Cauca Timbio from Colombia, you really should. It comes hot out of the press with smoothe notes of peanut butter and cocoa and finishes sweetly and gently. This is a great all-day coffee that we know you’ll love.

The art on the walls is pretty spectacular, too. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of the snake-wranglin’ preachers in West Virginia, but photographer Michael Donovan was able to capture the intensity of it quite remarkably in our current exhibition.

At the Pocket Bar, Keelan has been in high gear prepping for the big barista competition later this month. If you catch him on bar, which you probably will, sweet-talk him into a shot of his competition espresso. It’s incredible. It’s got body, it’s got depth, and it’s got swagger.

Over in Grant Park, we’ve just launched a series of dinners paired with seasonal, craft brews. We’re calling them Octane Beer Dinners, and they’re going to help you get through the winter. Each month, we’ll present to you a multi-course feast curated around one of those craft brews we keep mentioning. This month, we paired spicy pumpkin soup, sweet potato gnocchi and sauerbraten with an oak-aged milk stout. Genius, we know. Just wait til you see you next months’ menu…

So, last but not least, the Southeast Regional Barista Competition, or #serbc if you speak hash-tag, is just around the corner. On November 30th, the best baristas all over the Southeastern United States will converge upon Atlanta to throw down in epic, caffeine-laden battle. The competition pits barista against barista in a battle of wits, and of technique. At the end of it all, the spro-slinger in that top spot get’s to represent for his or her city in the National competition next year.

For some of us in the coffee biz, this is our moment to really let our coffees shine. If ever you wanted to experience the pinnacle of our craft and enjoy lots of free brown drink in the process, you should definitely make your way to Ponce City Market on November 30th and check out the circus. If you’re having trouble finding it, just get to Ponce City Market and start sniffing. You’ll find it sooner than you think.

All right, everyone, this sort of brings us to a close. Make sure to hop over to our blog around the same time next month for your next fill-up!
